The Big Winners at the Cannes Lions 2019

The 2019 Cannes Lion ended in a splash of gold wins for 27 of the most hard-hitting, impactful advertising campaigns over the last year.

Across industries of technology, entertainment, health, food and sports among others, the best stories that were bold, challenging and brought a fresh perspective to the marketing world emerged Grand Prix winners, out of a whopping 13,000 submissions.

From the overall list of winners, we selected our favorite campaigns:

Burger King- The Whopper Detour: Burger King won the Grand Prix for Titanium, Direct and Mobile for this cheeky but brilliant idea where users of the Burger King app get a Whopper burger for only a cent when they were near a Macdonald’s, the franchise’s biggest competitor.

Nike- Dream Crazy: Possibly the most controversial campaign the year, Nike in partnership with American Football player, Colin Lapernick took a risk to produce a campaign that even got President Trump buzzing. It certainly paid off with an Outdoor and Inaugural Entertainment for Sport Grand Prix.

The New York Times- The Truth is Worth It: The NY Times won a Film and Film Craft Grand Prix for its harrowing series of ads detailing the importance of thorough investigative reporting.

Black&Abroad- Go Back to Africa: The winner of the Creative Data Grand Prix, this campaign sought to reframe the conversation around race, flipping the expression ‘go back to Africa’ on its head and posting a series of stunning photos of the continent with the hashtag #GoBackToAfrica.

Childish Gambino- This is America: The viral music video that still captures attention till today won an Entertainment Lions for Music Grand Prix, for its bold socio-political commentary on America.

Wavio- See Sound: This campaign won an Innovation Grand Prix with its vision for a household device which alerts people with hearing difficulties to potentially dangerous sounds – from a crying baby to a fire alarm or shattering glass.

Google- Creatability: Creatability explores how creative tools like drawing can be made friendly for people with disabilities, using an open source programme where the community is encouraged to participate in their development.

Of course there way many more inspiring and brilliant campaigns that won in other categories which you can see here.
